Bugs from the Bench.."Experimenting with Fish Skullz"

Photobucket
Talked to a buddy yesterday that told me he was catching quite a few wallleye at a local lake close by , he's not fly fishing for them but he'd said that a couple of his spots could probably be reached by a wading angler. That got my wheels to spinning and wondering why I couldn't catch a few eyes with the long rod..Now I've caught walleye on my flyrod before but it's always been fishing a spillway or just accidental catch in a lake. I'd never really given much thought to making a concerted effort at catching them on the flats of our local reservoirs. After a little more conversation and a little prying by me I found out that one of the successful methods had been throwing small crankbaits up along the flats early and late. One of the better baits had been a blue/white wally diver as of late. After getting off the phone I went downstairs and dug through some of my old walleye tackle and just happened to find a matching lure. The thought crossed my mind of seeing what I could do with the seven-weight...nah , better just try to tie up something that'll match it as close as I can.

I was already sitting at my desk with my tying buddy (he also donates materials to the cause occasionally) working on some clousers so the streamer materials were strung everywhere , after a little rummaging I came up with some materials and thought my way through a couple of patterns.

I had a package of fish skullz that I got on sale a while back and hadn't tried them yet ,they just so happened to be blue. They were easy to use once you figure out the logistics of the placement. I like the looks of the skullz , not so sure about my new patterns though.

I wasn't overly excited about any of my creations but I tied a couple of each to try out anyway. Not sure when my next opportunity will be to get down to this lake but I've got the flies now to give it a try....if they don't work I can always see just how far that seven will throw a wally diver!

Thanks guys..we'll have to see how they look in the water and if they actually catch anything!!
Yeah Jay , Lucky (the amazon in the pic) is a real handful , especially around my tying bench. He's a free flight parrot so he has total reign of the house when we're home. He's taken a real interest to my tying and loves to sit and watch...and occasionally fly away with my tying materials!!

  4. Great looking flies. lOoks like they will definitely do the trick. That cool parrot looks like he is fly tying material. Some of it's iridescent green feathers look like they would attract a fish or two ;)

  6. I've only got a couple of patterns that I use the green feathers for , I'm not sure why I don't use them more often actually. They're a great shade of green. I've got a mason jar crammed full of em.... you guys that are interested give me an address and I'll send a few your way ,maybe you can come up with a good fly to use them with and share it with me.
