A Couple of Hours on the Creek

Lately I've been on this kick of searching out new local waters for my carp chasing addiction.
I've had limited success so far but I've found some areas that I'll be returning to once the weather warms up. I had a couple of hours to kill yesterday afternoon so Joe and I headed out to a new section of creek that I've been slowly exploring.

A beautiful afternoon with my fishing buddy and another spot that gets an asterisk on the map.

    1. Thanks Jay...If I didn't know better myself you might even think that water would hold smallies or trout just from looking at it. No such luck though , just a city creek in my backyard with a decent population of ole rubber lips.

  2. All of those holes looked fishy to me. Nice catch as well! I have never chased carp with the fly rod in hand, but lately I have been thinking I need to jump on the band wagon. Looks like a ton of fun

    1. If you enjoy sight-fishing to large ,wary fish then you can't beat it in my opinion. Of course this is from a guy in Kansas who doesn't have a lot of options for sight fishing with a flyrod!
Give it a shot , the best part is that they live evereywhere so you probably have them in your backyard.

    1. Thanks...Chasing carp on the fly definitely seems to be getting more popular. I love my coldwater fishing but for the challenge and subsequent reward carp are hard to beat.

  4. I noticed the goose taking interest in your buddy.

    1. Actually the geese on this creek can be a real hindrance to fishing. These carp are so wary that something as simple as a goose swimming down the creek will put them down for a short time.
But hey , it's their creek not mine , I'm just glad to share it with em!

  5. Is that the Sage Smallmouth rod? Nice fish. Wish I could hit 'em like you.

    1. No , actually it's an old 5 weight z-axis that I built when the series first came out.
Thanks...they're just starting to get going here in my locals. My suggestion to anyone wanting to be successful at carping would be to just keep scouting new waters. I've put in a lot of time just walking shorelines and creek bottoms to find areas that hold fish. Once you find a few good spots the fun really begins!!

  6. That is some pretty nice looking water that looks like it should hold some trout as well. Nice carp...

  7. This Kansas boy only wishes that his backyard creek held trout! I'm not complaining though , just happy that I'm finally coming around and taking advantage of the species that are available to me.
Still waiting on that shot of you holding your first fly caught carp with a big ole grin...

    1. Thanks...you'll enjoy it , sight fishing to big fish never gets old.
For clear water I like to use a fly pattern like the BackStabber (you can look it up online) I tie mine in mostly olives and blacks for my fish. In stained water try a large nymph (BHHE) or an egg under an indicator to help you detect the hit.

  9. We have water like that with trout, some very large ones, but they have the wits of a second grader. Love that you HAVE creeks with carp! Scouting and having it work is fun-good for you!

  10. Thanks Gregg...I'm just starting to figure out some of these creeks , while they're not just loaded with carp they have enough fish to keep you interested for an afternoon of fishing.

    1. Still waiting to see your ugly mug holding one of these beasts , we'll get you one on the fly this year even if you have to come over my direction to do it.
That yak should open up some new water for ya so I'm sure it's just a matter of time!

  15. Thanks Lynn...I've been enjoying your posts as well. It's always nice to read about waters that you actually have the opportunity to fish. You're trips down to the White really got me itching to make a trek down and try to catch some of that action!

    1. It's been the best for caddis dry fly fishing that I have ever had on that river system. Probably about over. Going tomorrow to give it another try though!
