Hanging around the Locals...WarmWater Weekend

I had some things going on this last weekend that kept me around home instead of floating down a beautiful smallmouth stream unfortunately. Even so , I managed to sneak away for a few hours on a couple of occasions and wet a line on a few of the local waters.

Nothing much to tell , a few bass and some bluegill out of a little pond.

Several wipers from a local reservoir along with a channel cat by-catch.

And one small carp from a local city lake close to the house.

Just enough action to tide me over until I can get a "real " fishing trip planned!

  1. Quite the multi-species outing! Those are always fun. It's always a nice surprise when it's something unexpected on the end of the line...like a catfish!

    1. I enjoyed the variety as well. I'll be back out chasing those wipers again for sure , they can't be beat for a good battle.

  2. I'm number 1 a trout fisherman. But I love getting out locally to fish warm water than sit in front of the computer all day. This would be a topnotch day for me. Thanks my friend.

    1. Thanks Howard... I love my trout fishing as well but this time of year most of our trout streams can get pretty crowded anyway. It's a good time to check out your other options and avoid the masses.

  3. Well, I have come to prefer the warm water species, and the local waters are often my quickest and easiest way to some fish on the fly. Would love to get in some Wiper fishing on a fly rod. Those are some nice looking fish. What weight rod did you use for those and what patterns did you use?

    1. Thanks Mel...those wipers are great fun on the flyrod for sure. I was using an eight weight rod with a 300 grain sinking line to get down to where the fish were at. For flies I was using either a double deciever or a Murdich Minnow pattern. The murdich minnow is a great fly for wipers , white bass and smallmouth...one of my favorites.

  4. You can't beat that, getting what's needed to be done. Then doing what's required..angling. Local is GOOD.

    1. I like local as well , but maybe not as much as you do being that you live around some of the most beautiful local waters I've seen.
It's always nice to ply your home waters with a little success though.

  6. Nice. I've never liked my water skeeter that much on lakes. Too hard to paddle around with those short paddles, and gets pushed around by the wind. I may need to reconsider as much as I see you out on lakes. Or shrink a little so I'm not such a large sail for the wind to catch! I've been contemplating a fishing kayak, but had to put on hold until the fall.

    1. Dave - is yours the low profile model like mine? It definitely makes a difference on the lakes. It's not ideal by any means but it still beats fishing from shore.

    2. Yours is kind of a low-rider. I'm afraid it's my profile though, not the boat's profile causing the problem! Still planning on the Predator 13 Kayak this fall.

  7. Wipers really are good looking. Glad you were able to get into fish close to home. Always a good feeling.
